The commander manages people, air and casualties during the response, and getting the breathing-apparatus discipline right is critical. This lesson covers BA control, boundary management and casualty handling.

Managing a BA team entry

  1. Brief the team on the plan, the target, and the communications and withdrawal signals.
  2. Log each wearer's cylinder pressure and time in at a BA control point.
  3. Monitor the air and the time, and plan the withdrawal before the air runs low — not after.
  4. Keep communications open and a rescue/backup team ready to go in for the team if needed.

Boundaries and casualties

  • Control the fire boundaries and check the adjacent spaces for spread, above, below and to the sides.
  • Search for and rescue casualties safely, and hand them over for first aid without delay.
