No Ambulance Coming: Why a Child Emergency at Sea Is Different

A yacht has no ambulance, no pharmacy and no hospital, so a child emergency at sea has to be survived with the people and stores already onboard. The distance to help is the reason the response must be organised and properly trained rather than improvised.

The Chain of Response: Alarm, Bridge, Medical Person, Captain

The response chain runs from your own safety, to the alarm, to the bridge, to the trained medical person, to telemedical advice, to the captain evacuation decision. Your job as first on scene is to raise the alarm properly and act only within your training.

Telemedical Advice, Evacuation and the Incident Report

Telemedical advice by satellite gives the yacht a doctor, but only as good as the information passed to them. The captain then decides between managing onboard, diverting, a tender ashore or helicopter evacuation, and every incident is documented in full.

Drowning is the dominant paediatric risk on a yacht and it is silent, fast and easy to miss. Raise the alarm, keep eyes on the child, get the trained responder, and send every immersion casualty to a doctor even if they seem completely fine.

Choking, Anaphylaxis and Asthma: The Breathing Emergencies

Choking, anaphylaxis and asthma are fast-moving airway and breathing emergencies where a silent child is the worst sign. Raise the alarm, get the trained responder and the child own medication, and understand that the hands-on techniques must be learned and assessed on a proper course.

Falls, Head Injury, Crush Injuries, Burns and Bleeding

Falls, head injuries, crush injuries from heavy doors and hatches, burns and severe bleeding are the everyday physical hazards of a yacht for a child. Recognise them, make the scene safe, raise the alarm and get the trained responder, and get telemedical advice for any child head injury.

Heat, Dehydration, Seasickness, Fever and Poisoning

Heat illness, dehydration from seasickness, febrile illness and poisoning from chemicals, medication or leftover alcohol are common child emergencies at sea. Recognise, remove the cause, raise the alarm and get telemedical advice early, and never give a child medication yourself.

A paediatric-ready yacht puts children on the muster list with a named person to carry them, holds correctly sized life jackets with crotch straps, and keeps a locked, in-date medical locker checked against flag state requirements. Preparation readies the vessel; only assessed training readies you.

Drills, Certification and the Qualification You Must Actually Hold

This course is preparatory study only and is not a Paediatric First Aid certificate. You must hold a current, practically assessed qualification from an approved provider, drill child emergencies onboard, and defer always to the ship medical guide, telemedical advice and the captain.
