Equivalents, Exemptions and the Shifting Unit Numbers

WSET Level 1 and Level 2 are recognised equivalents for Units 12 and 13, and some STCW HELM (Operational) courses are accepted for Unit 17, subject to GUEST confirmation. Unit numbering has been revised over time, so always verify the current unit list before booking.

You are about to pay for Advanced Wine Appreciation 1 and 2. You already hold WSET Level 2, which you did in a former life behind a bar in Melbourne. Before you enter your card details, stop: you may be about to buy something you already own.

These equivalents are real and they exist because GUEST does not want to duplicate a respected external award. But note the third column. Recognition is a decision made by GUEST administration, not by you, not by a crew agent, and not by a provider keen to fill a course. Get it in writing before you rely on it.

Why Unit Numbers Move

The GUEST unit numbering has been revised over time. Older progression charts — still circulating as PDFs, still pinned in crew houses, still quoted in forum posts — show different numbers for the same content:

  • Interior administration formerly appeared as Unit 04; the current list places it as Unit 34.
  • Interior management formerly appeared as Unit 16; management-level interior content now sits under Unit 36.

This matters commercially. If you book "Unit 04" from a chart you found online and the provider is teaching the current syllabus, you may end up in the wrong classroom or paying for a unit you have already covered.

The Rule That Never Goes Out of Date

Confirm the current unit list, the current progression chart and the current equivalents with an IAMI-approved Training Provider or GUEST administration before you book. Not after. Not "the school seemed confident". Before.

What Is Never an Equivalent

  • Experience alone. Ten seasons is not a unit. It may support sea-service requirements; it does not replace assessment.
  • A hotel or restaurant background. Valuable, respected, and not a GUEST unit.
  • Online study, including xplor. These lessons are preparatory only — no unit, no CoC, no regulated award.

Onboard Notes

  • Build a one-page "what I already hold" sheet before you talk to any provider. Half of crew training spend is duplication.
  • If a provider cannot map their course to a current GUEST unit number, that is your answer.
  • Equivalence is granted, not claimed. Get confirmation from GUEST administration in writing and keep it with your record book.
