Someone in a crew house will tell you the GUEST CoC is a golden ticket. Someone else will tell you it is an expensive piece of paper that no captain reads. You are about to spend thousands of euros of your own money, so you deserve the truthful version, which sits between those two and is more useful than either.
What GUEST Certification Does
- Gives you a shared industry standard to be measured against, instead of the private opinion of whichever chief stew last saw you work.
- Makes you legible to good boats. Well-run vessels and management companies increasingly expect GUEST at senior and HOD level.
- Structures your development so you learn interior administration, budgeting and leadership before you are drowning in them.
- Provides evidence — record book, logged service, assessed units — that survives a bad reference or a boat that sold.
What GUEST Certification Does Not Do
- It is not a flag-state licence. It does not make you legal to sail; STCW and your ENG1 do that.
- It does not get you a job. Attitude, references, availability and fit still decide hiring.
- It does not override a poor reputation. The industry is small and talks.
- It is not, on its own, a substitute for sea time — which no course can sell you.
A Realistic 3-5 Year Path

Treat that table as a shape, not a schedule. Some people move faster on a busy charter boat; some spend two years on a quiet private programme and log fewer guest days. And the sea-service and prerequisite requirements at every stage are set by IAMI/GUEST and change — verify the current progression chart with GUEST administration or an approved Training Provider before you commit to any plan, including this one.
