INT-HR-4.1.1

Fatigue and the Reality of Charter Season

Fatigue erodes judgement, mood and self-assessment before anyone notices, so it must be managed through the roster rather than left to individual willpower. Managers roster rest first, keep honest records, rotate the worst duties, and escalate manning shortfalls rather than absorbing them.

It is the fifth back-to-back charter. Your third stewardess has just put the wrong guest allergy card on the wrong cabin door. She is not careless — she is thirty-one days in with no full night of sleep, and she is the same person who was faultless in May. Fatigue does not announce itself. It arrives as small errors, short tempers and a slow erosion of the judgement you depend on.

What Fatigue Actually Does

Fatigue degrades reaction time, decision-making, memory, mood regulation and risk perception. Critically, it degrades self-assessment first — the fatigued person is the least reliable judge of how fatigued they are. That is why fatigue is a management control, not a personal responsibility.

Onboard, fatigue is driven by:

  • Long duty days with fragmented rest and 0200 finishes followed by 0600 starts.
  • Noise, vibration, heat, motion and light in crew cabins.
  • Back-to-back charters with no genuine recovery day.
  • Shared cabins with people on opposite watches.
  • Time-zone changes and crossings.
  • The cultural pressure to look tireless.

Recognising It in Your Team

Signal What it may look like
Cognitive Repeated small errors, forgetting instructions, re-reading the preference book
Physical Microsleeps, clumsiness, dropped items, frequent minor injuries
Emotional Irritability, tearfulness, flatness, withdrawal from the mess
Behavioural Cutting corners, avoiding checks, over-reliance on caffeine
Team Conflict rising, humour disappearing, silence at meals

Managing Fatigue as HOD

  • Roster rest before you roster work. Build the rest in, then see what service the remaining hours can deliver — not the other way round.
  • Protect the unbroken block. One genuine long sleep beats three fragmented naps.
  • Keep honest rest-hour records. They are the evidence you need when you tell the Captain the department is under-manned.
  • Rotate the worst duties. The 0200 finish and the 0600 start should not always land on the same person.
  • Watch handovers. Fatigue-driven errors cluster at shift changes and at the end of long charters.
  • Model it. If you never rest, nobody else will admit they need to.
  • Escalate. If the programme cannot be delivered within lawful rest, that is a manning conversation with the Captain and the management company. Saying nothing is a choice, and it is the wrong one.

When Fatigue Becomes Something Else

Persistent exhaustion that does not lift with rest, loss of interest in everything, hopelessness, or reliance on alcohol to sleep are not fatigue management issues — they are health issues. Do not diagnose, and do not prescribe. Encourage the person to speak to a doctor or a professional service, and support them in doing so.

Onboard Notes

  • The stew who says she is fine at the end of charter five is not reliable evidence. Look at the errors, not the reassurance.
  • Never treat a fatigue-driven mistake as a discipline matter without first asking whether the roster caused it.
  • A department that boasts about how little it sleeps is a department heading for an incident.
  • General professional guidance only. This is not clinical advice.
