It explains the historic yacht engineering certificates — MEOL(Y) and the Y4, Y3, Y2 and Y1 grades — and how they relate to the modern MCA small-vessel (SV) engineering framework, so existing holders understand where they sit and how to revalidate or transition. Who it is for: holders of legacy 'Y' certificates, and those planning an engineering pathway who need to understand the older tickets they may encounter. The Y-series in outline
The legacy yacht engineering certificates ran from the Marine Engine Operator Licence (Yacht) — MEOL(Y) — up through Y4, Y3, Y2 and Y1, with the higher grades authorising larger tonnage and higher engine power, and the senior grades carrying chief-engineer responsibility. Together they formed a complete engineering ladder for the yacht sector, running in parallel with the deck certificates, from an entry engine-operator licence up to a chief engineer of substantial yachts. Understanding the ladder helps make sense of the qualifications a serving yacht engineer may hold.
