Recovering a casualty with an FRB
- Search using an appropriate pattern, and keep the casualty in sight once found.
- Approach slowly and under control, with the propeller kept clear of the person.
- Recover the casualty aboard using the technique suited to their condition.
- Provide first aid, keep them warm, and return to the parent ship for handover.
- Operate as part of a coordinated search and rescue with the parent ship and any other units.
- Manage hypothermic or injured casualties with care during the recovery.
- Maintain communications and navigation to and from the parent ship.
- Recover the boat and the crew safely at the end of the operation.
WARNING — Slow and clear on the final approach On locating a casualty, the fast boat is brought right down to a slow, controlled approach with the propeller clear. The speed that got the boat there quickly is exactly what must be taken off for the recovery.
TIP — Coordinate with the parent ship The FRB usually works as part of a wider search-and-rescue effort. Maintaining communications and coordination with the parent ship makes the search systematic and the recovery safe.
