It covers the legal and professional responsibilities of working a small commercial vessel. Entry: none. Required for the commercial endorsement of the Yachtmaster and related certificates.
From private to professional
A commercially endorsed skipper operates within a legal and regulatory framework rather than as a private boater: the vessel must be coded for its use and its area, carry the required safety equipment and certificates, meet the manning and hours-of-rest rules, and comply with the codes of practice. The skipper is professionally and legally responsible for the safety of everyone aboard, and cannot simply do as they please. This framework is what makes commercial operation safe, lawful and insured, and the skipper works inside it.
- Understand the coding of small commercial vessels and its limits — the area and the persons carried.
- Meet the safety-equipment, certification and manning requirements for the coded vessel.
- Comply with the hours-of-rest rules and the applicable codes of practice.
- Accept the legal and professional duty of care to the crew and the passengers.
NOTE — The endorsement makes it professional The commercial endorsement — earned with PPR, a medical, first aid and a radio certificate — turns a recreational qualification into a professional one, with the legal responsibilities that come with it.
WARNING — Stay within the coded limits A coded vessel's permitted area and passenger numbers are set by its coding certificate. Operating outside those limits is unsafe and unlawful and typically voids the insurance — the skipper keeps the vessel within them.
