Sun sights and the noon latitude

The sun is the ocean navigator's workhorse, worked through the day for position and to check the compass. This lesson covers the practical sun-run-sun day and the meridian-passage latitude that anchors it.

A day's work with the sun

  • Take a morning sun sight for a position line, and run it up along the boat's track through the forenoon.
