Communications, safety and heavy-weather command

Far offshore the communications, the safety equipment and the heavy-weather decisions all rest on the skipper alone, with no coastguard a short call away. This lesson pulls those together for ocean command.

Communications and safety at sea

  • Understand the GMDSS sea areas (A1-A4): they define the radio equipment required, and beyond VHF range the boat relies on MF/HF (SSB) or satellite.
