The Chief manages the electrical plant as a system: the generators and power management, the distribution and protection, and the automation that monitors and controls it. High-current work and insulation testing demand strict safety, and earth faults are found and cleared promptly. Critically, the Chief must know the vessel's blackout-recovery procedure — how to restore essential power, steering and propulsion after a total loss of electrical power — because a blackout at the wrong moment is one of the most dangerous events a vessel can face.
