Unattended machinery spaces — alarms, rounds, and being on call

A periodically unattended machinery space — UMS — is not an engine room nobody looks after. It is an engine room whose supervision has been moved: from a pair of eyes at the console to a monitoring system, an alarm extension and a duty engineer who is responsible whether he is in the workshop, in the mess or asleep in his bunk.

MO72 Schedule 3 cl 3.1 explicitly recognises "service on call in periodically unattended machinery spaces" on vessels ≥750 kW as qualifying sea service. Being on call is watchkeeping. The Marine Order says so.

What makes a space UMS-capable

The duty engineer

You are on watch. You do not leave the vessel. You remain fit — that means rested and unimpaired, for the whole period, not just the parts of it you expect to be woken. You carry the alarm. You know where your torch is.

And you make rounds. UMS does not abolish the round; it schedules it. A cold monitoring system will tell you a bearing has failed. Only a human will tell you it is about to.

Responding to an alarm at 0300

  1. Acknowledge the alarm — this stops the bridge escalation, and starts your clock
  2. Read what it actually says before you move. The panel is telling you where to go
  3. Take a torch and a radio. Tell the bridge you are entering the machinery space
  4. Go and look. Confirm the alarm is real before you act on it
  5. Fix, isolate or stabilise — and if it is beyond you, or the plant is at risk, call the chief engineer. Calling early has never ended a career; calling late has
  6. Log it. The time, the alarm, what you found, what you did

WARNING — Never enter an unattended machinery space alone without telling someone The bridge must know you are going below, and must know when you are out. If your vessel has a dead-man alarm, use it — it is not an insult to your competence, it is the only thing standing between you and lying unconscious behind a generator for four hours.

The most dangerous machinery space on any vessel is the one everybody believes is empty.

Being on call is not being off duty

Crew — and some engineers — treat the UMS night as free time. It is not. The responsibility for the propulsion of the ship sits with you. The fact that AMSA counts it as qualifying sea service should tell you exactly how seriously the Order takes it.

You are asleep in the same sense that a fire crew is asleep. Which is to say: dressed, close, and expecting the bell.
