HELM-M-L1.1

Leading and managing the ship's team

Senior officers set the tone for how the whole crew works, and the management level of HELM is about leading and managing people, not just standing a watch. This lesson covers leadership and management at the senior level.

Entry & progression

Course: Human Element, Leadership and Management at the management level — the mandatory STCW course for senior officers (Master, Chief Mate, Chief Engineer, Second Engineer), building on HELM Operational with a leadership and management focus. Entry: HELM Operational and management-level candidacy.

Leading from the top

At management level the officer is responsible not only for their own watch but for how teams across the ship perform. This means setting clear standards, allocating and managing resources and workload, motivating and developing people, managing conflict and performance, and applying the company and international rules — ISM, STCW, MLC — through leadership rather than instruction alone. The senior officer builds the systems and the culture within which the operational-level officers and crew work, and is judged by how well the whole team performs, not just by their own skill.

  • Set clear standards and expectations and hold the team to them fairly and consistently.
  • Allocate and manage tasks, resources and workload across the department.
  • Develop, motivate and manage people, including conflict and performance issues.
  • Apply and reinforce ISM, STCW and MLC through leadership and example.

NOTE — Culture is set at the top A senior officer who cuts corners licenses the whole crew to do the same; one who insists on standards fairly builds a crew that keeps them. The safety culture reflects what the leaders tolerate and require.

TIP — Develop your people A senior officer who trains and develops the team builds capability that outlasts any single voyage. Delegating with support, and letting people grow into responsibility, strengthens the whole department.
