The refreshed safety competences

The refresher confirms that the perishable safety skills still work, and it is worth knowing what each covers. This lesson outlines the refreshed competences.

What the refresher confirms

  • Personal Survival Techniques: donning survival equipment, boarding survival craft, and survival actions in the water.
  • Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting: using extinguishers and fighting a fire in a team, with breathing apparatus where relevant.
  • Survival Craft & Rescue Boats (for holders): launching, boarding, managing and recovering survival craft.
  • Advanced Fire Fighting (for holders): controlling and organising firefighting operations.

The refresher is a practical revalidation of the same competences the original courses taught, brought back up to a reliable standard: donning a lifejacket and immersion suit and boarding a raft for PST; using extinguishers, wearing breathing apparatus and fighting a fire as a team for FPFF; launching and managing survival craft for PSCRB; and controlling firefighting operations for AFF. The seafarer refreshes only the competences they actually hold and use. The value is confidence that, when an emergency comes, the training will be there — practised recently rather than remembered vaguely from years before.

TIP — Refresh what you hold and use A seafarer refreshes the safety competences they actually hold — not everyone needs the survival-craft or advanced-firefighting refresher. Keep track of which certificates you hold and when each is due for revalidation.

NOTE — The value is confidence when it matters The refresher's real value is that, in a real emergency, the skills are recent and reliable rather than a vague memory. It is the difference between acting and hesitating when it counts.
