Leading the response
A major machinery-space emergency
- Take charge, raise the alarm and account for the engineering team.
- Direct the response — for fire, isolate the fuel with quick-closing valves, stop machinery and ventilation, and use the fixed system; for flooding, start pumping and stop the ingress.
- Liaise with the master and bridge, and provide the power and services needed for the wider response.
- Manage the aftermath: stabilise the machinery, assess the damage, and record the event for reporting.
The defining challenge of an engine-room emergency is that the space usually must keep providing power, steering and firefighting services to the whole ship even as the Chief fights the casualty within it. The Chief balances fighting the fire or flooding against keeping the ship alive, directs and rotates the team safely, liaises with the bridge, and knows when to escalate or, in the last resort, evacuate and seal the space for the fixed system.
