Entry: engineroom service, with a QMED portion. Progression: three tiers, then Assistant Engineer-Limited above it. Read this first: the name of the top tier misleads almost everybody. Start here.
WARNING — "Unlimited" means unlimited HORSEPOWER — not an unlimited vessel 46 CFR 11.524(a): "DDE endorsements are issued in three levels of propulsion power limitations… These endorsements are limited to vessels of less than 500 GRT on certain waters as specified in § 11.501."
The word unlimited attaches to the propulsion power, and to nothing else. Every DDE — all three tiers, DDE-Unlimited included — is capped at vessels of less than 500 GRT (11.501(c), 11.524(a)). A DDE-Unlimited is not an unlimited licence. It is a small-vessel licence with no horsepower ceiling.
The Designated Duty Engineer is the engineer's ticket for a small vessel. Not the third of three on a rotating watch — the engineer. One of you. It is the most realistic first officer-level engineering credential a working yacht engineer will hold, and the one most often held for the wrong reasons by people who misread its name.
Designated duty, not designated watch
The definition of operational level at 46 CFR 10.107 names the job precisely: "Serving as Officer in Charge of a Navigational or Engineering Watch, or as Designated Duty Engineer for periodically unmanned machinery spaces." Read the second half of that. The regulation puts the DDE alongside the watch officer and then tells you the difference: your engine room is periodically unmanned. Nobody is standing in it.
So the plant runs on alarms, and you are where the alarms go. That is the whole shape of the job, and Module 2 of this course is about nothing else.
Where it sits on the national ladder
DDE is a national engineer officer endorsement under 46 CFR Part 11 Subpart E. Section 11.501(a) lists exactly thirteen national engineer grades, and it is a closed list. There is special provision in it for fishing vessels, MODUs and OSVs — and none at all for yachts. A yacht engineer on a US-flagged vessel therefore holds the ordinary commercial engineering credential, the same one held by an engineer on a tug. That is not a gap in the system. It is the system, and it is the ladder to learn.

Never say gross tonnage does not apply to engineers. It applies to exactly the two rungs a yacht engineer is most likely to hold, and the DDE is the tighter of the two.
Who actually holds one
On a US-flagged yacht under 500 GRT with one engineer aboard, this is the ticket. It is also the ticket on tugs, small passenger vessels, ferries, research boats and workboats. There are far more DDEs at sea than there are unlimited chiefs, and a DDE who runs a boat well is a more useful person to have aboard than a chief who has only ever been one of six.
CAUTION — GRT is not GT — do not assume your boat qualifies The US thresholds (200, 500, 1,600) are Regulatory tonnage under 46 U.S.C. ch. 145. The yacht world quotes ITC / Convention tonnage. A yacht marketed as "499 GT" is quoting ITC; its regulatory tonnage is a different number. Never equate the two. (46 CFR 11.211(h) does provide that a vessel measured solely under the Convention system has that tonnage credited as GRT.) Take the vessel's actual document to the National Maritime Center before you assume a DDE covers it.
