Water, Salt, Sunscreen and Magnetism

How salt, chlorine and sunscreen actually damage watches and metals, what a screw-down crown does, and the correct time-critical response when a watch has been in the sea.

A guest comes up the swim platform ladder, hands you a diving watch, and says cheerfully that it went to twenty metres and it is "fine, it is waterproof". It is dripping salt water, there is sunscreen smeared across the crystal, and one of your colleagues is already reaching for the deck hose. Stop. What happens in the next two minutes decides whether this watch survives.

Why the sea is the enemy

Salt water does not simply evaporate — it leaves crystalline salt behind. Salt crystals grow in the gaps around the crown, in the bracelet links, under the bezel and against the gaskets. They abrade seals, they hold moisture against steel, and they cause corrosion and pitting that no amount of polishing fixes.

Sunscreen is worse than most crew believe. The oils, silicones and chemical filters in modern sunscreens degrade rubber and silicone straps, stain leather permanently, dull coated lenses and creep into every seam. Chlorine from the pool or jacuzzi attacks gold alloys and is associated with stress-corrosion cracking in white gold, and it degrades gaskets.

The screw-down crown

Many sports watches seal only when the crown is screwed fully home. If a guest has unscrewed the crown to set the time and pushed it back without screwing it down, the watch is effectively open — and a swim will flood it. Do not screw it down yourself; you cannot tell a threaded crown from a push-pull one with certainty, and forcing it destroys the threads. Report it.

When a watch comes out of the sea

  • Do not rinse it. Do not run it under a tap, and above all do not hose it.
  • Do not press any pushers or move the crown while it is wet — that is how water is pumped inside.
  • Blot the outside dry with a clean, soft, dry cloth.
  • Look for condensation under the crystal. Fogging means water is already inside and the movement is corroding as you look at it.
  • Take it to the chief stew immediately, say what you saw, and write it down. A watch with water inside is a time-critical problem, and delay is what turns a service into a replacement.

Onboard Notes

  • Salt, sunscreen and chlorine destroy more valuables at sea than clumsiness does.
  • Never rinse, hose or solvent-clean a guest watch. Blot and escalate.
  • Fog under the crystal is an emergency, not a curiosity.
  • "Waterproof" is not a word the industry uses. Neither should you.
