Fault-finding under pressure — the discipline of not guessing

A bad ETO reaches for the thing they fixed last time. It worked once, so it becomes a habit, and the habit works often enough to survive. Then one night it does not, and they change a component that was healthy, and now they have two faults and no idea which is which.

Nobody calls the ETO when things are calm. They call at 0300, with the owner aboard, when something has gone dark. The difference between a good ETO and a bad one is not knowledge. It is what they do in the first ten minutes.

Guessing is not fast. It is just early.

The systematic approach

The error chain

Six steps, in this order, every time

  1. Make it safe. Before anything: is anyone in danger, is the vessel in danger, does the bridge need to know? A fault is a bridge problem before it is an electrical one.
  2. Define the symptom precisely. Not 'the AV is down' — which zones, since when, what changed, does anything else share that supply? Half of all faults are solved by asking the second question.
  3. Look at what the system is telling you. Alarm history, event log, drive fault codes, trip indications. Read the record before you touch the plant, because touching the plant destroys the record.
  4. Split the system. Halve it. Is the fault upstream or downstream of this point? Then halve what is left. Six halvings resolve sixty-four possibilities.
  5. Test the hypothesis before you replace anything. A measurement that confirms the fault is worth an hour of parts-swapping.
  6. Fix it, prove it, and record it. Prove it under the condition that produced it — not under no load, at the dock, in daylight.

The measurements that end arguments

  • Voltage at the load, under load. A supply that reads healthy off-load and collapses on-load has told you it is a connection, not a source.
  • Insulation resistance — but isolate, and know what you are about to put 500 V across.
  • Current, per phase. Imbalance is a diagnosis in itself.
  • Continuity end-to-end, not terminal-to-terminal in the same box.
  • Temperature. A warm terminal at 40 A is a loose terminal at 40 A. Thermography finds tomorrow's fault today.

The pressure

The owner is aboard. The chief wants an ETA. Someone is standing behind you asking whether you have found it yet, and the honest answer is no. The pressure is real, and it is designed — by nobody, but perfectly — to make you skip step two and start swapping parts.

TIP — The three sentences worth practising "I don't know yet — here is what I have ruled out." It converts an unbearable silence into a progress report, and it is true.

"I need ten minutes with the log before I touch anything." Buy the time. It is the cheapest ten minutes of the night.

"This is safe to run, but I want it watched." Sometimes the right answer at 0300 is a controlled, monitored, documented workaround until daylight and a spare.

Say what you actually know

The most valuable habit an ETO can build is the refusal to state as fact anything they have not established. Not because it is noble, but because everyone downstream of you — the chief, the master, the shipyard, the person who does this job after you — will make decisions on the strength of what you said.

'I don't know' is a complete and professional answer. 'Probably the drive' is not, unless you can say why. The plant does not care about your confidence. It only responds to what is true.
