What it lets you do

Start with the entitlement, because the entitlement is the thing people get wrong. Marine Order 72, Schedule 1, says an Engineer Class 2 certificate permits its holder to serve as **chief engineer on a vessel of less than 3000 kW propulsion power, in any operating area**. An overhaul is not a parts-replacement exercise. It is the one chance you get to look inside a machine that has been running blind for thousands of hours — and every component you take out is evidence about how the engine has been operated.

Ask any experienced engineer what has actually ruined their week and it is almost never a main engine. It is a generator that will not take the load, a purifier that keeps tripping, a seawater pump that has eaten its impeller, an air compressor that will not make start air.

A great many superyachts sit below 3000 kW of main propulsion. An Engineer Class 2 holder can be the chief engineer on all of them, anywhere in the world. Understand what that means before you accept it.
