The sole engineer

Working as the only engineer aboard removes the safety net of a team, and this lesson covers how to rebuild that redundancy through discipline, documentation, and training deck crew to act when you cannot.

The EC3 makes you chief. On a great many vessels in its range, chief means only engineer. There is nobody to ask, nobody to check your work, and nobody coming down the ladder to help. That changes everything about how you work.

A three-engineer department has redundancy built into it: the second catches the third's mistake, the chief catches both. A sole engineer has no such layer. Every diagnosis you make is final because there is nobody to disagree with it, and every job you do is signed off by the person who did it. That is not freedom. It is exposure, and the engineers who last are the ones who build their own layers back in.

Build the redundancy you no longer have

  • Write down your reasoning before you act on it. The act of writing catches the leap you did not notice yourself making.
  • Photograph everything before you dismantle it. You are the only person who will reassemble it.
  • Never take the last one apart. If a component has no spare, it does not come off the vessel until the spare is aboard, unless it has already failed.
  • Keep a running list of what you deferred. A sole engineer's memory is the only maintenance system on board, and memory fails.
  • Phone a friend. Shoreside technical support, the engine agent, the last chief who had this vessel. The isolation is physical, not professional.

What you must not do alone

Some jobs are two-person jobs regardless of what the schedule says. Entry into an enclosed space — a tank, a cofferdam, a sealed void — is never a solo job. Not for a minute, not for a look, not ever. The people who die in tanks are almost always experienced, almost always in a hurry, and almost always alone. Anything involving isolated but stored energy — hydraulics, springs, a raised hatch, a suspended load — wants a second pair of eyes on the isolation.

WARNING — Isolation and lock-off is not optional when you are the only engineer On a large plant a colleague might notice you working on a machine that somebody else is about to start. Alone, nobody will. Physically isolate. Physically lock off. Physically tag the starter, the breaker and the bridge control. Tell the master, in words, that the machine is out of service and why. The habit that feels like theatre on a small vessel is the habit that keeps you alive on it.

Working with a deck crew who are not engineers

Your fire party, your damage control team and your extra pair of hands are deckhands and stewards. They will not know what a quick-closing valve is, where the emergency generator starts, or which of the two red handles kills the fuel to the engine room. That is not a criticism of them. It is a job for you.

Train them. Walk them round. Make somebody other than you able to shut down the fuel, trip the ventilation, close the flaps and start the emergency fire pump — because the one scenario where those things matter most is the one where you are the casualty.

Knowing your limit

The single hardest judgement a sole engineer makes is the one about their own competence. There is no chief to tell you that this is beyond you. Sea time does not confer omniscience, and the certificate on the bulkhead does not mean you have seen this particular failure before. Saying "I do not know, and we are not sailing until somebody who does has looked at it" is the most senior thing an engineer ever says.
