Who Accredits, Who Trains and Who Certifies

GUEST is governed and accredited by IAMI, which approves training providers and issues the interior Certificate of Competency. The PYA is a partner and advocate but does not accredit GUEST, and these xplor lessons are preparatory study only.

The PYA, the MCA and the Awarding Bodies

The MCA regulates STCW and ENG1, IAMI accredits GUEST, and separate awarding bodies such as Highfield, RSPH and WSET sit behind food safety and wine qualifications. The PYA advocates for crew but accredits nothing.

Regulatory, Vocational and Industry Certificates — and What Each Is Worth

Certificates fall into three categories: regulatory ones that make you legal to sail, vocational awards from outside bodies, and the IAMI GUEST industry certificate of competency. Each answers a different employer question and carries weight at a different career stage.

Introduction Level: The Yacht Junior Steward(ess) CoC

The GUEST Introduction level comprises Units 23, 32, 02 and 03 and leads to the Yacht Junior Steward(ess) CoC. Supporting requirements such as STCW, ENG1, Food Safety Level 2, a training record book and logged sea service also apply, and the exact figures must be confirmed with GUEST or an approved provider.

Advanced Level: The Yacht Senior Steward(ess) CoC

The GUEST Advanced level comprises Units 34, 05, 07, 08 and 09 and leads to the Yacht Senior Steward(ess) CoC. It also expects additional sea service, a maintained record book, Medical First Aid and typically a tender qualification, all of which must be confirmed against the current GUEST chart.

Beyond the Classroom: Sea Service, the Record Book and Supporting Certificates

Every GUEST level rests on three legs: assessed units, logged sea service and guest-service days, and a maintained record book plus supporting certificates. Exact day counts and prerequisites are set by IAMI/GUEST, change over time, and must be confirmed against the current progression chart.

Specialist Units and the Purser Stream

GUEST specialist units cover cigar service, floristry, barista, advanced wine (Units 12 and 13) and advanced bartending (Units 14 and 15); they are stackable, can be taken at any stage and evidence depth rather than producing a CoC. A separate Purser stream runs alongside the hospitality path.

Management Level: The Yacht Chief Steward(ess) CoC

GUEST Management level comprises Units 36, 30, 21 and 17 and leads to the Yacht Chief Steward(ess) CoC. It expects Food Safety Level 3, Advanced Fire Fighting, PSCRB, Medical Care, an introduction to ISM and extensive logged service, all subject to confirmation with GUEST.

Equivalents, Exemptions and the Shifting Unit Numbers

WSET Level 1 and Level 2 are recognised equivalents for Units 12 and 13, and some STCW HELM (Operational) courses are accepted for Unit 17, subject to GUEST confirmation. Unit numbering has been revised over time, so always verify the current unit list before booking.

Choosing a Training Provider: Cost, Time and Quality

Choose a GUEST training provider by confirming IAMI approval, current unit numbers, assessment method and prerequisites, not by price alone. Training is a significant personal cost in money and lost earning days, so get current written quotes from approved providers.

The Honest Picture: What Interior Certification Is Worth and Your 3-5 Year Plan

GUEST certification is an industry-recognised standard that makes you legible to good boats, but it is not a flag-state licence and it will not get you a job by itself. A realistic path from junior stew to chief stew or purser takes three to five years and must be planned against the current GUEST progression chart.
