A DDE's mains are usually high-speed marine diesels — light, hot, highly rated, and asked to make a great deal of power from very little metal. They are extremely reliable when they are given clean fuel, clean air and cold water. They fail, almost always, because one of those three was not delivered.

The main engines run when the boat moves. The generators run always. On a yacht with air conditioning, galley, laundry, watermakers, stabilisers and a full guest load, the genset is the hardest-worked machine aboard — and it is the one most often treated as an appliance.
